Our region\u2019s economy thrives during the warmer months as businesses, shops and restaurants extend their hours and stock their shelves to best accommodate our region\u2019s residents and visitors. We\u2019re all gearing up for a summer season bustling with social and economic activity in our towns and villages.<\/p>\n<p>Small businesses play a major role in our local communities. They create. They serve. They fix. They nurture. They teach. They inspire.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sba.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/advocacy\/SB%20Profiles%202014-15_0.pdf\">2015 report by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration<\/a>\u00a0(SBA) describes how important small businesses are to New York State\u2019s economy. Keeping in mind that the report\u2019s definition of \u201csmall business\u201d is a firm with fewer than 500 employees, the federal analysis notes that small businesses make up over 99% of employers and account for over two million businesses statewide. When we break it down further, we see that 51% of New York\u2019s small businesses employ between one and 100 people and nearly 20% employ fewer than 20 people. Additionally, there are over 1.6 million self-employed small business owners who do not employ hired help.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4830\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/NYSmallBizEmployment.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"363\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.osc.state.ny.us\/reports\/economic\/economic_impact_small_business_2016.pdf\">2016 report from the Office of the New York State Comptroller<\/a>\u00a0describes how \u201cmicrobusinesses\u201d &#8212; firms with fewer than ten employees &#8212; make a significant impact on the state\u2019s economy: \u201cOf the small businesses with paid employees in 2013, almost two-thirds had fewer than five employees, with over 80 percent having fewer than ten employees. These 369,000 microbusinesses provided nearly 943,000 jobs with total payroll close to $40 billion. Businesses with fewer than 20 employees reported total employment of nearly 1.5 million, with total payroll of $63.2 billion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4834\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/NYSmallBizEmployeeNumber-500x309.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/NYSmallBizEmployeeNumber-500x309.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/NYSmallBizEmployeeNumber-768x475.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/NYSmallBizEmployeeNumber.jpeg 825w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So how does the North Country measure up in its contribution of small business activity within New York State? They are the foundation of our economy. ANCA works with small businesses in a variety of ways in order to bolster a vibrant and resilient economic landscape in the Adirondack North Country. Among our small business members and partners are the artists and makers who participate in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adirondack.org\/adirondack-buyer-days\">Adirondack Buyer Days<\/a>\u00a0trade show.<\/p>\n<p>On March 27-28, ANCA hosted its 31st annual Buyer Days show in Saratoga Springs, NY. This wholesale gift show attracts artists and entrepreneurs who own and operate small businesses all over the region. This year, over 80 artisans exhibited at the show. Some of these businesses are as small as you can get, where the artisan manages all of the business operations from production to marketing and sales. Others have expanded enough to hire part-time and full-time employees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christisobel.com\/\">Christi Sobel<\/a>, an illustrator based in Brooktondale, NY appreciates the accessibility of the Buyer Days show because it offers businesses of different sizes and levels of experience the opportunity to meet and greet with potential retail buyers. \u201cThis is a friendly show and it\u2019s the right scale for me,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m just one person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The show offers an exceptional opportunity for shop owners and buyers to interact face-to-face with artists and makers. Charlotte Besaw of Mannsville, NY creates colorful accessories like mittens, scarves, hats and more from upcycled sweaters and clothing and markets them through her company\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HandCandymittens\/\">HandCandy Mittens<\/a>. Beyond Buyer Days and other programs that support local artisans, we also serve small businesses through our continued work with small farms, makerspaces, independently owned businesses that are featured in the North Guide, and community development groups who work to revitalize downtowns, promote tourism and attract new entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>We believe that by supporting small businesses throughout the region, the economic and social benefits will be far-reaching and long-lasting. Particularly in rural regions like Northern New York, an economy populated by a variety of small businesses can be more stable and more resilient than one dominated by very few large firms.<\/p>\n<p>The infographic below depicts how supporting our local businesses has immediate economic benefits in our communities.
