Big Opportunities. convenes potential business buyers, sellers on February 12-14<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">SARANAC LAKE, N.Y.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2014 A regional partnership focused on retaining small businesses in northern New<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">York State will convene current business owners and potential buyers for a three-day educational and<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" aria-owns=\"pdfjs_internal_id_11R\">networking conference. The North Country Center for Businesses in Transition (CBIT) partnership invites<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">aspiring business owners to attend its second<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Small Communities. Big Opportunities: Own a North<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Country Business<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Conference, which will be held in-person with a virtual option on February 12-14, 2023,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in Saranac Lake, N.Y. on the heels of the Adirondack village\u2019s ten-day Winter Carnival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">In-person events will take place at Hotel Saranac, where attendees can connect with current and aspiring<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">business owners, business support professionals, and CBIT representatives. The conference will kick off<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with an opening reception before the Winter Carnival\u2019s closing fireworks show. Registration for in-person<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" aria-owns=\"pdfjs_internal_id_12R\">and virtual attendance is open at www.northcountryopportunities.com.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cThe conference is designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of participants in a short amount of<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">time,\u201d said Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) Entrepreneurial Economy Program Director<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Danielle Delaini. \u201cWe\u2019ll cover the whole gamut, from broad topics like what it\u2019s like living in the North<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Country to practical details like tax considerations, marketing strategies and business valuation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Ben Dixon, executive director of the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and community liaison<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with CBIT, said the conference offers attendees the chance to learn directly from current owners about<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">what it is like to operate a business in the North Country and connect with a wide range of business<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ownership opportunities. Participants can meet face-to-face with owners of businesses located<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">throughout the region \u2014 including Nature\u2019s Storehouse in Canton, N.Y.; Done Right Cleaning in St.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Lawrence County; Lafave Automotive in Vernon, N.Y., and other businesses including restaurants, shops<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and service providers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cAll of the different business support organizations in CBIT work very closely together so that we can<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">connect the entrepreneur who\u2019s looking to take on a new business with various resources in the North <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Country,\u201d said Dixon.<br \/>\n<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cWe have a well organized and well established entrepreneurial ecosystem here <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">that supports the entrepreneur.<br \/>\nAttending the conference will help introduce the entrepreneur to that <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ecosystem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Following a successful virtual conference in 2021, this year\u2019s event offers different tracks for aspiring,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">beginning and more established entrepreneurs, no matter where they are in the ownership process.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">From individuals who are just starting to explore the idea of owning a business, to people who have<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">already identified a business they would like to purchase, to owners who have recently taken over a<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">business \u2014 attendees will be supported wherever they are in the business ownership process.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Participants will have opportunities to meet with retiring owners, learn about available businesses, and<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">learn from experts about key elements of a successful business transition, including marketing, branding,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">accessing capital and relocating the North Country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Attendees will also hear from guest speakers who have engaged with the CBIT partnership. Sandy Maine,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">founder of Adirondack Fragrance &amp; Flavor Farm in Parishville, N.Y., recently passed on her successful<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">body products and candle business to her son and daughter-in-law. Cori Deans of Keene, N.Y. will speak<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">about her experience operating a successful fermented food business, Small Town Cultures, which has<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">rapidly outgrown its Lake Placid facility and will soon be moving to a larger space in Plattsburgh. Max<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Nason, new owner of Happy Camping RV in Vermontville, N.Y., and David Reichel, who will take over an<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">established small business based in Gouverneur, N.Y. next month, will also present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Citing that the average business transition takes three to five years to complete, Delaini said it is<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">remarkable that the CBIT partnership \u2014 which serves 14 counties in northern New York \u2014 supported 37<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">successful business transitions since ANCA established the Center four years ago. She said the 215<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">businesses that accessed CBIT services during this period represent over 1,040 full- and part-time jobs<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">retained in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Among them is Adirondack Awards and Promotions, a Lake Placid company that has been providing<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">customized trophies, awards, and engraved and embroidered products for local businesses,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">organizations and sports teams since 1962. Tyler Merriam and Nick Prechel purchased the business in<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">August 2022 with CBIT\u2019s support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cFor people who are considering attending the conference, I would strongly encourage them to do so,\u201d<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">said Merriam. \u201cNetworking and connections are critical in the business world. We have received so much<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">support from local business owners, from previous owners and sellers, and people who have gone<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">through this process before. Building those connections and learning from them has been invaluable.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cAnd for an entrepreneur who is looking for a place-based business, I would sing the praises of this<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">region hands down,\u201d he added. \u201cThe Adirondack region is simply gorgeous. There\u2019s so much that can be<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">done community-wise, recreation-wise. The opportunities are unlimited.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">CBIT encourages attendees to arrive early for the conference, experience Winter Carnival activities, and<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">explore the Saranac Lake area\u2019s many small businesses, restaurants and shops. During the conference,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">CBIT will announce travel and tour packages for eligible participants who are interested in owning a<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">North Country business and exploring the region\u2019s scenic, cultural and recreational assets.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">In November, National Grid awarded ANCA a $100,000 grant to support the conference and other 2023<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">CBIT programs. Additional funding has been provided by Adirondack Foundation; Community Bank;<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Franklin County Government Office of Economic Development and Tourism; New York State Electric &amp;<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Gas (NYSEG), an Avangrid Company; and SUNY Canton Small Business Development Center.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">CBIT was established by ANCA in 2018 with grant funding from the Northern Regional Border<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Commission to address the loss of area businesses by providing matchmaking services with potential<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">buyers, access to planning tools, and connection with existing services. CBIT services have expanded to<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">provide support for aspiring entrepreneurs who wish to purchase an existing business. CBIT is comprised<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of 13 community liaisons and partners across ANCA\u2019s 14-county service area, including representatives<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">from the Adirondack Economic Development Corporation, Adirondack Park Agency Economic Services,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Essex County Industrial Development Agency, Franklin County Economic Development Corporation,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Greater Watertown-North Country Chamber of Commerce, Hamilton County Economic Development,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Lewis County Economic Development, LivingADK, St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, Saranac<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, SUNY Canton Small Business Development Center, Ti-Alliance, and<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Registration for the three-day in-person conference, which includes the opening reception and daytime<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">meals, costs $100; participants who sign up by January 20, 2023 receive a discounted early bird rate of<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">$80. The mission of the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce is to<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">cultivate, develop and support Chamber members and other businesses by creating a vibrant business climate that<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" aria-owns=\"pdfjs_internal_id_35R\">encourages growth and enhances the unique quality of life in St. Lawrence County.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce (SLACC) acts as a catalyst for business and community development<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in the Greater Saranac Lake Area. SLACC provides services for its membership and generates economic<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" aria-owns=\"pdfjs_internal_id_36R\">development with promotional and marketing strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) is a non-profit organization that serves, markets and<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">promotes the Ticonderoga Area including Ticonderoga, Crown Point, Hague, Moriah and Putnam, NY. TACC serves<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">as the area&#8217;s Business and Visitor Center. TACC\u2019s Mission is to initiate and provide programs, services and<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">leadership which will enhance a cooperative business community and create a vibrant economy, making the<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Ticonderoga Area an exceptional place to live, work and visit. TACC\u2019s Vision is to be the leading advocate for<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">business, serving as a driving force in the economic vitality of the greater Ticonderoga Area, uniting communities<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and maximizing resources. TACC&#8217;s key areas of focus include: membership, business, tourism, communication,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" aria-owns=\"pdfjs_internal_id_37R\">leadership and organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Ticonderoga Revitalization Alliance (Ti-Alliance) is a non-profit 501c3 local development corporation (LDC) whose<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">mission is to restore economic prosperity in the Ticonderoga region by serving as a catalyst for innovative ideas and<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" aria-owns=\"pdfjs_internal_id_38R\">resources, and for public-private partnerships and investment opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The SUNY Canton Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is part of a statewide network of business assistance<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">centers supported by the State University of New York and the Small Business Administration. The New York State<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">SBDC (NY SBDC) is accredited by America\u2019s Small Business Development Centers (ASBDC). The SBDC is charged with<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">assisting North Country entrepreneurs, small business, and industry through advising, training, and research.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Additionally, the SBDC provides needed services to manufacturers, women, veterans, minority, and physically<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">challenged individuals, or on businesses impacting distressed and targeted areas.
