{"id":6436,"date":"2023-05-04T16:15:11","date_gmt":"2023-05-04T20:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/?p=6436"},"modified":"2023-05-08T16:16:55","modified_gmt":"2023-05-08T20:16:55","slug":"geography-of-grace-new-dance-film-directed-by-tiffany-rea-fisher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/regional-press-coverage\/geography-of-grace-new-dance-film-directed-by-tiffany-rea-fisher\/","title":{"rendered":"Geography of Grace, new dance film directed by Tiffany Rea-Fisher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"author-popup-afd34cee-22d9-11e4-8a3c-001a4bcf887a-asset-844e8e0c-e9eb-11ed-ab84-df277ad081ce\" class=\"tnt-byline asset-byline\" title=\"\" data-original-title=\"\">By Robin Caudell Press-Republican<\/span><\/p>\n<p>LAKE PLACID \u2014 \u201cGeography of Grace\u201d choreographer Tiffany Rea-Fisher\u2019s new dance film premieres Tuesday evening at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Before August 2020, Rea-Fisher, executive artistic director of EMERGE125, didn\u2019t know the historic John Brown Farm existed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOriginally, I was in the area getting ready to film the welcome video for FISU, the winter games,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose games got canceled, but I was originally supposed to do the choreography for the closing ceremony. The host country does the ceremony, and you welcome the new country, which was the U.S. and also Lake Placid. I was in the area about to film that video when everything shut down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rea-Fisher was in Lake Placid with half of her company, and the other half was en route on a bus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Lake Placid Center for the Arts said \u2018Well, you\u2019re here. Can we commission something from you? What do you want to make?\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was like, I don\u2019t know. As I was looking for inspiration, I wasn\u2019t finding anything that really landed with me. I kept finding things about the Lady of the Lake and all that. But that\u2019s not what to make a piece about. Then somebody said do you know that the abolitionist John Brown, his farm is here in Lake Placid. I couldn\u2019t believe it. I had been coming up for almost two decades at that point, and I never knew about the farm. No one mentioned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LPCA connected the choreographer to Martha Swan, executive director of John Brown Lives!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe took me on a tour and I told her I\u2019m in this funny predicament in the sense that I came here to do one thing,\u201d Rea-Fisher said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to pivot on a dime but I have this idea that I think might work and off we went. This piece is finally premiering. You\u2019ll see in the piece dancers because it kind of jumps back and forth between the reality of the descendant visiting the farm and going to the exhibits as one would and having these surreal moments where the farm comes alive through movement around them. But in those everyday scenes, the dancers are all masked.
