{"id":6885,"date":"2023-09-18T12:45:30","date_gmt":"2023-09-18T16:45:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/?p=6885"},"modified":"2023-09-19T14:52:19","modified_gmt":"2023-09-19T18:52:19","slug":"john-thomas-brook-name-change-made-official","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/regional-press-coverage\/john-thomas-brook-name-change-made-official\/","title":{"rendered":"John Thomas Brook name change made official"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Tim Rowland<\/p>\n<p>On a sun-dappled afternoon along what was once the Adirondack frontier, a hateful slur was put to rest for good, and in its place blossomed an emphatic tribute to a man whose name was very nearly lost to time.<\/p>\n<p>With a sizeable crowd gathered Saturday, Sept. 16, on the side of a lonely country road, a sign was unveiled officially\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adirondackexplorer.org\/stories\/john-thomas-brook-name-change\">changing the name of Negro Brook in Vermontville<\/a>\u00a0to John Thomas Brook, named for a 19th century Black farmer whose lands were nearby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis name change is not erasing history,\u201d said Paul Smith\u2019s professor and historian Curt Stager. \u201cThis is recovering history that has been erased.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John Thomas was born into slavery on Maryland\u2019s Eastern shore.
