The Civilian Conservation Corps, only open to young men, was an effort to employ people during the Great Depression while attempting to improve the county\u2019s natural environment. Nationwide, the corps planted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nystateparks.blog\/2018\/01\/23\/civilian-conservation-corps-in-new-york-state-parks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3 billion trees<\/a>\u00a0and built structures some of which remain today.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as climate change mitigation is at the global forefront, the U.S. is designing a similar program that could make its way to the Adirondacks, and it will be open to any \u201cyoung\u201d person in the country, no degree required.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration in September announced the start of the American Climate Corps to train and employ people in climate-focused jobs. Inspired by President Franklin D. Roosevelt\u2019s nine-year program from the 1930s, Biden\u2019s climate corps was in development for years with encouragement from lawmakers such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative aims to hire 20,000 young people in its first year and plans to be anchored in equity and environmental justice, a White House press release\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/09\/20\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-launches-american-climate-corps-to-train-young-people-in-clean-energy-conservation-and-climate-resilience-skills-create-good-paying-jobs-and-tackle-the-clima\/#:~:text=The%20American%20Climate%20Corps%20will%20mobilize%20a%20new%2C%20diverse%20generation,advancing%20environmental%20justice%2C%20all%20while\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">states<\/a>. The partnership is between AmeriCorps, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Departments of Labor, Interior, Agriculture, and Energy.
