{"id":7075,"date":"2023-10-30T08:54:15","date_gmt":"2023-10-30T12:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/?p=7075"},"modified":"2023-11-01T09:09:47","modified_gmt":"2023-11-01T13:09:47","slug":"housing-solutions-a-recap-from-the-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/regional-press-coverage\/housing-solutions-a-recap-from-the-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Housing solutions: A recap from the series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Tim Rowland<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To help deal with an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adirondackexplorer.org\/stories\/regions-housing-problems-revealed\">estimated 7,500 housing units needed in much of the greater Adirondack region<\/a>, multiple agencies, municipalities, nonprofits and even private homeowners themselves are working on it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Essex and Franklin counties have created\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adirondackexplorer.org\/stories\/essex-county-land-bank-2\">land banks<\/a><\/strong>, and one is in the works in Clinton County. Land banks fix up dilapidated homes acquired through nonpayment of taxes and sell them to people of limited means, using the proceeds to tackle the next project in the pipeline.<\/li>\n<li>Local governments are also becoming directly involved in housing projects, using\u00a0<strong>pools of funding from grants<\/strong>\u00a0or land sales to develop small communities of workforce housing, like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adirondackexplorer.org\/stories\/help-hamilton-county-workforce-housing\">this example in Hamilton County<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adirondackexplorer.org\/stories\/help-is-on-the-way-wilmington-homestead-housing\">this one in Wilmington<\/a>. These projects are small, but potentially impactful in concert with other solutions.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adirondackexplorer.org\/stories\/housing-nonprofits\">Nonprofits<\/a>\u00a0such as the Adirondack Foundation, Northern Forest Center, Adirondack North Country Association and Homestead Development Corp. of Lake Placid are assisting with affordable housing projects<\/strong>\u00a0that range from small apartment buildings to modest developments to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adirondackexplorer.org\/stories\/help-is-on-the-way-cooperative-housing\">cooperative communities set up by homebuyers themselves<\/a>.
