Our social media channels were full of feel-good MLK Jr. quotes about love and light and doing the right things. Few posts and shares contained words from his<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Letter from a Birmingham Jail.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that letter, the lines written are uncomfortable for most. It takes us \u2014 specifically the White us and religious us \u2014 to task. He calls us out on our silence, slow progress, and our inability to acknowledge the genocide, slavery and White Supremacy our nation\u2019s institutions and systems were built on. That\u2019s not what we want to experience and feel on a \u201choliday.\u201d It\u2019s not what we want to feel in the face of a world that seems more chaotic than calm.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are coming off a year of war \u2014 Russo-Ukraine, Israel-Palestine and Sudan. Of internal conflicts in Myanmar and insurgencies in Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Tunisia and more. With all of the heartbreak, who wouldn\u2019t want to be reminded simply <\/span><strong>&#8220;to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7284 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-quote-image-500x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"379\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-quote-image-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-quote-image-1080x1080.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-quote-image-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-quote-image-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-quote-image-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-quote-image-2048x2048.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-quote-image-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 379px) 100vw, 379px\" \/><\/span> bear.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we easily forget that MLK Jr. is speaking about much more than a feel-good love, but a radical love. A love that&#8217;s ultimate purpose is\u00a0selflessness,\u00a0compassion, understanding, and justice. The type of love and care that truly <\/span><strong>\u201cdrives out the darkness\u201d<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of oppression and injustice. A love that includes being uncomfortable, risking, and sacrificing power and privilege because we understand that <\/span><strong>\u201cinjustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.\u201d<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That <\/span><strong>\u201cwhatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MLK Jr. reminds us that <\/span><strong>&#8220;change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.&#8221;\u00a0 <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reality is we need to be taken to task, we need to be held accountable, we need to stop delaying justice. To stop saying it can\u2019t be done and start saying it must be done, <\/span><strong>\u201cfor the time is always right to do what is right.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On December 19, 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/governor-hochul-continues-new-yorks-leadership-racial-equity-signs-legislation-establishing\">New York State Governor Kathy Hochul signed a bill<\/a> that empowers a commission to study \u201cnot only the history of slavery in New York but it\u2019s subsequent effects on housing discrimination, biased policing, income inequality and mass incarceration of African Americans\u201d (New Times Dec. 19, 2023). She stated, \u201cToday, we begin to right the wrongs of the past and set our entire State on a path towards a better future as we explore what New York should look like.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I made the mistake of reading the public comments to the Governor&#8217;s announcement; they reminded me how far we have yet to go. They reminded me of the widespread unwillingness to accept the ugliness and cruelty of the past and the long reaching and lasting effects of those policies and laws.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How unwilling we are to face the difficult history of the actions of this country, our countryfolk, or ourselves. It\u2019s easier to claim \u201cit wasn\u2019t us,\u201d \u201cit\u2019s in the<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7285 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-imagine-a-better-world-333x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"303\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-imagine-a-better-world-333x500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-imagine-a-better-world-720x1080.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-imagine-a-better-world-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-imagine-a-better-world-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-imagine-a-better-world-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MLK-imagine-a-better-world-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/> past,\u201d \u201cwe don\u2019t want our children to feel bad,\u201d that there is a \u201cright way to work for justice but this isn\u2019t it,\u201d and \u201cthat change takes time.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s easier to ask everyone just \u201cto be kind to each other\u201d as if that will end racism, ageism, sexism and all the other -isms that demean and dehumanize.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How cruel an ask when your land has been stolen, your relatives sold, your education challenged, your marriage contested, your loan denied, your vote discarded, your child&#8217;s life ended\u2026 because they knocked on the wrong door.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NO! That is NOT how change happens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s through the dedicated labor of those with privilege and power repairing and rebuilding the systems and institutions that were created to work only for some and not for others. It\u2019s through reaching out and across our communities, listening to the stories and believing them, and wanting for others that which we have. It\u2019s the hard struggle of ending oppressive and unjust systems, institutions and structures both past and present that will finally <\/span><strong><em>bend our moral arc towards justice. <\/em><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until each of those who truly believe in equity and justice <\/span><strong>\u201chave the vision to see that injustice must be rooted out by strong, persistent and determined action.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Adirondack Diversity Initiative<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span>determined to work and fight until<b> &#8220;justice runs down like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream.&#8221; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s a slow process (we are working to repair over 400 years of injustice) to move people from fear and discomfort to understanding and action. But <\/span><strong>\u201cwe cannot walk alone. And as we walk we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead.
