\n<\/b>Northern Lights School Grant Will Fund Critical Building Upgrades<\/strong>
\nGeothermal and roofing projects move forward with $320K from NYS<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

SARANAC LAKE, N.Y.<\/strong> \u2014 As Governor Kathy Hochul expressed this month in her State of the State address and proposed 2026 state budget, the future of New York\u2019s child care sector continues to be a priority for her administration. Here in Saranac Lake, a small nonprofit school will put State funds to good use by making its aging building more energy efficient, comfortable and safe for local children and their caregivers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This January, Northern Lights School (NLS) received the green light from the State to move forward on a major project that will save the school money on energy bills and provide a more stable future for the facility for years to come. NLS was awarded a $320,000 grant in July 2024 from the <\/span>Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) <\/span>to replace the school\u2019s unreliable oil furnace with a modern, energy efficient geothermal heating and cooling system. The New York Nonprofit Infrastructure Capital Investment Program grant, which required matching funds from the school, will also be used to install an insulated roof on the school building. Work on both projects is anticipated to begin this spring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis grant was a long time coming,\u201d said Ann Armstrong, current NLS board member and former board president who led the school\u2019s grant writing efforts. \u201cWe wouldn\u2019t have received these funds without the early support from our generous community and ANCA\u2019s expertise. This project will sustain our school building for decades to come and let us put funds once spent on fossil fuels towards our staff and young families.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When Armstrong and the school board approached the Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) for grant advocacy support in July 2023, the regional nonprofit leveraged its expertise and networks in the small business and energy sectors to identify funding sources that might support the school\u2019s urgent infrastructure needs. ANCA staff helped NLS navigate a complex landscape of federal, state and foundation grants by helping locate suitable grant opportunities, draft proposals and submit applications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ANCA\u2019s clean energy team also provided information and resources regarding energy efficiency upgrades for the building and local contractors who could complete the geothermal and roofing projects. Staff helped determine that an ultra-clean, long-lasting, geothermal heat pump system, paired with a new insulated roof, was the school\u2019s best option with the lowest long-term cost.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are ecstatic that this grant came through for Northern Lights after submitting so many strong proposals to other funding agencies,\u201d said Jon Ignatowski, ANCA\u2019s manager of food systems businesses, who previously served as the organization\u2019s grants advocacy coordinator. \u201cFunding for childcare is already very limited and competitive, and we have found that support for existing facilities in rural areas like ours is particularly difficult to secure. We are grateful to the NLS team for their perseverance and to <\/span>DASNY<\/span> for its forward-looking investment in the community. We look forward to completing a project that will serve as a model for the rest of the state.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

NLS currently provides early childhood education and daycare for 34 children ages three months to five years and employs 18 local staff. Saranac Lake\u2019s Head Start program occupies one classroom in the school building, providing childcare for an additional ten families and jobs for between four and seven staff and support professionals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Established by local parents and teachers in 1997, the school was originally located in Wilmington, N.Y. As the student population expanded to include more families in the Saranac Lake area, the school relocated in 2007 to the lower floor of the Saranac Lake First Presbyterian Church. In 2021, the school community realized a longtime dream of owning its own facility with the purchase of the Lake Colby School on Trudeau Road from the Saranac Lake Central School District. The building and property have provided space to grow the school\u2019s offerings for local families and personnel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“This grant is a pivotal investment in the future of Northern Lights School,\u201d said current board president Seth Jones. \u201cWith critical upgrades like the geothermal system and roofing improvements, we\u2019re ensuring our building remains operational and safe for the families who rely on us for childcare. These improvements not only help us maintain our current services but also set the stage for growth \u2014 both in terms of the number of children we can serve and the jobs we can offer in our community. Completing this project is a major step toward fulfilling our mission to create more opportunities for local families, and continue providing high-quality care and education.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The installation of the new heating and cooling system will require drilling two wells, inserting piping into these wells, and connecting them to a geothermal furnace. The system will capture thermal energy by utilizing the earth\u2019s consistent 50-degree temperature and pumping water from the ground to a furnace for heating or through a refrigeration system for cooling. NLS was able to install necessary pipes and vents in the building last summer with grant support from the Cloudsplitter Foundation. Local contractors Scott Watkins from EMM Heating in Croghan, N.Y. and Wayne Davison from North Country Spray Foam in Tupper Lake, N.Y. will complete the projects.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYear after year, child care remains a critical economic issue in our region,\u201d ANCA Executive Director Elizabeth Cooper said. \u201cOur rural centers struggle to take on projects to improve or expand their facilities as they also aim to keep child care affordable for working families. ANCA has been advocating for more public and private funding to support these projects so our existing centers can remain in operation and sustain existing jobs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStrong child care centers provide essential support for local businesses and institutions that are the backbone of our rural economies,\u201d she added. \u201cWe are glad we were able to offer expertise, connections and grant navigation assistance to support Northern Lights School through their extensive efforts to secure funding. These improvements will have long-lasting positive impacts for local communities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jones said school staff and board have begun planning a community gathering to celebrate the project\u2019s completion in late spring or early summer. The celebration will include an opportunity for community members to help with planting and landscaping to rehabilitate the project site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
