Murry family honored in renaming of hill with former racist name<\/h3>\n

FRANKLIN \u2014 There\u2019s a small, remote hill tucked back in the woods between the hamlets of Bloomingdale and Gabriels, with a name that\u2019s troubled locals for a while \u2026 but no longer.<\/p>\n

\n

Earlier this month, the U.S. Geological Survey\u2019s Board of Geographical Names officially approved the renaming of Negro Hill to Murry Hill, changing the name from a slur to the last name of a Black family who owned a portion of the hill around two-and-a-half centuries ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that we got the news during Black History Month was just dope,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0Adirondack Diversity Initiative Executive Director Tiffany Rea-Fisher said.\u00a0\u201cBlack history is happening in real time. It\u2019s not just in the past. The fact that we got this news in February was just really wonderful. \u2026 My heart is just so full.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s been a desire for decades to call the hill by a better name.<\/p>\n
