{"id":9082,"date":"2025-03-27T10:11:49","date_gmt":"2025-03-27T14:11:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/?p=9082"},"modified":"2025-03-28T08:59:51","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T12:59:51","slug":"every-business-has-a-story-bd25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/north-blog\/every-business-has-a-story-bd25\/","title":{"rendered":"Every Business Has a Story: Snapshots From an Artisan Trade Show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>by Audrey Schwartzberg, ANCA Communications Director<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, ANCA hosted our 39th Adirondack Buyer Days trade show, where we welcomed dozens of makers from across the Northeast to Saratoga Springs, N.Y. for a unique opportunity to connect with each other and with retail buyers looking to stock their shelves with locally produced gifts.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adirondack Buyer Days is a not-for-profit event that empowers new, beginning and seasoned artisan entrepreneurs to grow their wholesaling skills, make connections, and build relationships with other makers and retail shops. The show gives retail buyers the chance to meet local artisans face-to-face, experience their products firsthand, and learn how they got to this point in their small business journey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Every maker has a story.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Jeff Wager, who refined his leather and woodworking skills over the years to a point where he felt ready to leave his job in the public sector and\u00a0establish his own business. At <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodpeckeraxeandleather.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woodpecker Axe &amp; Leather Co.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Wynantskill, N.Y., Jeff now hand crafts beautiful and utilitarian leather goods like wallets, belts, purses, tote bags, bicycle bags and cup koozies. Using full grain vegetable-tanned leather from the U.S. and Italy and a sturdy hand-stitching method called saddle stitching, he creates durable leather products that last for generations. This year\u2019s Adirondack Buyer Days was his first wholesale trade show. Judging by the impression he made with show organizers, neighboring vendors, and retailer shoppers, we\u2019re guessing this won\u2019t be his last.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9088 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Woodpecker-Axe-1-reduced-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Woodpecker-Axe-1-reduced-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Woodpecker-Axe-1-reduced-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Woodpecker-Axe-1-reduced.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And longtime Buyer Days vendor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christisobel.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christi Sobel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose whimsical nature illustrations adorn a variety of paper products like notecards, calendars and bookmarks. Christi holds notable credentials beyond her illustration and graphic design business including degrees in biology, art and scientific illustration. Ever the entrepreneur, she recently partnered with other makers to open a new shop in Ithaca, N.Y. Star Tree Studio is \u201ca collective of local working artists, dedicated to fair pay and control of their own creativity, and encouraging innovation and collaboration.\u201d These ideals \u2014 access, empowerment, innovation and collaboration \u2014 are very much at the heart of Adirondack Buyer Days and all of ANCA\u2019s programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9089 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Christi-Sobel-1-reduced-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Christi-Sobel-1-reduced-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Christi-Sobel-1-reduced-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Christi-Sobel-1-reduced.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Larry and Debbie Gonyea of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adirondacketching.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOorhlk30RUXKcwEpQxUW-Gt-WIInkEM2LjrcfONoij3zZHnmRB43\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adirondack Etching<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Glens Falls have attended several Buyer Days shows over the years, and each year they up their game. With a background in woodworking, Larry now pours his creative energy into his laser etching business, where he etches custom designs on a variety of materials and objects. Leading up to this year\u2019s show, Larry fashioned eye-catching signs that depict examples of his designs and collections. Glass etchings, in particular, are hard to photograph. The new signage, coupled with the slick black and white illustrations on vinyl business cards, are the kinds of stylistic details that make a trade show booth stand out. Many show vendors say that learning tips and tricks from other artisans is one of the most inspiring aspects of the Adirondack Buyer Days experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9086 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Adirondack-Etching-reduced-500x422.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Adirondack-Etching-reduced-500x422.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Adirondack-Etching-reduced-768x649.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Adirondack-Etching-reduced.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes it takes a major life change, challenge or disaster to flip the switch for creative entrepreneurs. More than one show vendor established their business during the COVID pandemic \u2014 like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cohnscandlebar.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cohn\u2019s Candle Bar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of East Nassau, N.Y. and AMF Creations of Cape Vincent, N.Y.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.menaiandco.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menai &amp; Co.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Therese, N.Y., it was the bears. Commercial bee-keepers since 2019, Rebeca Oblender and her family produced honey that was irresistible to local black bears. Repeated devastating attacks to the hives made their honey and beeswax business unsustainable. So they switched gears and turned their attention to their candle-making hobby. When their first batch of hand-poured soy candles sold out quickly, they decided to build out a new family-run business venture. At her second Adirondack Buyer Days show, Rebeca featured Menai &amp; Co.\u2019s luxury home products \u2014 including all-natural candles and one-of-a-kind recycled wool blankets made by family in Wales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9085 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Menai-and-Co.-reduced-500x421.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Menai-and-Co.-reduced-500x421.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Menai-and-Co.-reduced-768x646.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/BD25-Menai-and-Co.-reduced.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Each maker at the show has a story<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 details and anecdotes of the why, when and how they followed their small business dream.
