{"id":9214,"date":"2025-04-24T11:24:11","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T15:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/?p=9214"},"modified":"2025-05-08T11:26:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T15:26:09","slug":"state-recognizes-jay-for-climate-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/regional-press-coverage\/state-recognizes-jay-for-climate-work\/","title":{"rendered":"State recognizes Jay for climate work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Adirondack town reduces carbon footprint with energy efficient upgrades, achieves bronze status in Climate Smart Communities program<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>By Mike Lynch<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The town of Jay has earned a bronze designation through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climatesmart.ny.gov\/\">Climate Smart Communities program<\/a>\u00a0to join a handful of Adirondack communities with that distinction.<\/p>\n<p>The state Department of Environmental Conservation made the announcement last week, recognizing Jay as one of eight communities statewide getting the designation in this round.<\/p>\n<p>Jay earned the certification through its efforts to reduce\u00a0its carbon footprint, including installing energy-efficient LED streetlights, switching over to battery-operated landscaping equipment and promoting the use of solar energy. It has installed a heat pump in its senior center so it can serve the\u00a0dual purpose of being a cooling center. The town has also led community education and outreach, including organizing a sustainability and energy fair last September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a great experience for the town of Jay,\u201d said Knut Sauer, Jay\u2019s Climate Smart Coordinator and town councilor. \u201cI think we are very excited about it, and everybody\u2019s now looking for the silver certification.
