{"id":9230,"date":"2025-05-09T14:46:38","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T18:46:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/?p=9230"},"modified":"2025-05-09T14:47:08","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T18:47:08","slug":"panel-weighs-in-on-balancing-solar-development-with-environmental-protection-in-the-adirondacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/regional-press-coverage\/panel-weighs-in-on-balancing-solar-development-with-environmental-protection-in-the-adirondacks\/","title":{"rendered":"Panel weighs in on balancing solar development with environmental protection in the Adirondacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Wildlife monitoring, parkwide planning identified as critical steps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Zachary Matson\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A trio of speakers shared insight into solar development both within the Blue Line and across the state, highlighting the need to balance a thirst for renewable energy with farmland preservation and environmental protection.<\/p>\n<p>The Adirondack Park Agency should develop parkwide maps and priorities for siting future solar projects and expand long-term monitoring of how new installations impact Adirondack wildlife, panelists said at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adirondack.org\/events\/2025-anca-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adirondack North Country Association\u2019s annual clean energy conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jackie Bowen, conservation director for the Adirondack Council, argued that APA officials should develop a broader strategy for solar projects, mapping where they should and shouldn\u2019t be developed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe agency is tasked with long-range planning and this is such a good example of where they should apply that,\u201d Bowen said.<\/p>\n<p>Bowen and other panelists highlighted the importance of siting solar projects to prevent cutting of trees, while also preserving the roughly 100,000 acres of agricultural land within the park. As New York attempts to transition to a renewable energy economy and meet greenhouse gas reduction targets, conflicting demands are pressuring open spaces.
